The spokesman of the Kosovo Police for the north, Veton Elshani, has confirmed that explosions were heard during the night near the police stations in Zveçan and Mitrovica North.
Elshani said that it is most likely a suicide bomb, as he announced that there were no injuries. He said that a police car was damaged. The police spokesman says an investigation has been opened, but there are no suspects yet.
These developments are taking place at a time when tensions in the north of Kosovo, inhabited by a majority of Serbs, have increased.
The tensions started on May 26, when the new Albanian mayors of the municipalities in the north, under the assistance of the Kosovo Police, entered the municipal buildings, amid the opposition of the local Serbs. Tensions culminated on May 29, when in Zveçan, Serbian protesters clashed with members of the NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR. Dozens of people from both sides were injured in the clashes.
Also, on June 13, the Kosovo Police carried out an action in North Mitrovica, where they arrested Millun Millenkovic. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Xelal Sveçla, said that the arrested person is suspected of being one of the organizers of the events in Zveçan on May 29. A day after that, three members of the Kosovo Police were arrested by Serbian forces in the north of the country, an action that the Government of Kosovo described as kidnapping.
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, declared a day ago that no soldiers and no policemen from Serbia have entered across the border with Kosovo. He said that Serbian police arrested three Kosovo policemen 1.8 kilometers from the border. The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, rejected the claims of Serbia, which said that the policemen of Kosovo had crossed the border and entered its territory.
Also, the Government of Kosovo announced that border controls with Serbia have been tightened. The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, declared that "our goal is security, and security starts at the borders". The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy and Security, Josep Borrell, said on Thursday that he will invite the representatives of Kosovo and Serbia next week in Brussels, an urgent meeting for crisis management./REL
