Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for stronger international sanctions against Russia, following a massive missile and drone attack on Kyiv that killed at least 31 people, including five children.

He stressed that despite the Kremlin's denials, sanctions work and need to be strengthened.

The attack took place on Thursday and is considered one of the deadliest since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022.

Ukraine's air force reported over 300 drones and eight cruise missiles launched by Russia. The strikes destroyed an apartment building and damaged civilian facilities such as a hospital, school, kindergarten and university.

159 people were injured, including 16 children. Meanwhile, Kiev declared a day of mourning after the attack.

US President Donald Trump condemned Russia's actions, calling them "disgusting", and warned of new sanctions if Putin fails to reach a ceasefire.

Trump initially gave a deadline of 50 days, which was then reduced to 10 or 12 days, with a deadline on August 8.
