Slovenia imposed an embargo on arms exports, imports and transit to Israel on Thursday, two weeks after declaring Israeli ministers persona non grata, state news agency STA reported, citing a government statement.

The measure was announced by Prime Minister Robert Golob after a government session. Golob said that Slovenia was the first European country to do so.

Slovenia recognised the Palestinian state in June last year and has since made repeated calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and increased aid distribution to the enclave.

Israel denounced statements last week by France, Britain and Canada that they could recognize a Palestinian state, saying it would reward Hamas for its October 7, 2023 attack on Israeli territory.

Earlier on Thursday, US special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in an attempt to salvage ceasefire talks in Gaza and address a humanitarian crisis.
