Slovenia is the first country in the European Union to ban arms trade with Israel due to the war in Gaza.
The announcement comes two weeks after the country declared all Israeli ministers "non grata", the state news agency, STA, reports.
The arms embargo was declared by Prime Minister Robert Golob after a government meeting on Thursday.
"Slovenia is the first European country to ban the import, export and transit of weapons to and from Israel," the government said in a statement.
He further added that he was moving forward “with complete freedom” as the EU was “incapable of taking concrete measures due to internal disagreements and division.”
In the midst of the devastating war in Gaza where "people are dying because humanitarian aid is being continuously denied them", it was "the duty of every responsible state to act, even if it means taking a step ahead of others", the declaration said.
According to her, the government has not issued permits for the export of weapons and military equipment to Israel since October 2023 due to the war.
In early July, Slovenia was also the first European country to ban all Israeli ministers from entering its territory.
In June 2024, the Slovenian parliament passed a decree recognizing Palestine as a state, following in the footsteps of Ireland, Norway, and Spain.
