Crisis in the Middle East, German Foreign Minister Wadephul to visit Israel!

To alleviate the dire situation of Palestinians suffering from hunger in the Gaza Strip, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephu l called on the Israeli government to create opportunities for safe land crossings into the war zone.

Only in this way can aid supplies reach the people in sufficient quantities, said the CDU politician, who is on a visit to Israel.

He urged the Israeli government to urgently allow the UN and international aid agencies safe access and, above all, the safe and effective distribution of humanitarian aid. The UN warned on Tuesday (27.07.) of increasing hunger in the Mediterranean coastal belt.

"Only by land can aid supplies reach people in sufficient quantities," said the German Foreign Minister.

The United Nations and international aid organizations must have safe access and, above all, a safe and effective distribution of aid.

Deaths and suffering among the civilian population in Gaza have reached "unbelievable proportions," Wadephul stressed.

He said the Israeli government must "provide immediate, comprehensive and sustainable assistance for the catastrophic situation in the Gaza Strip."

Hamas should no longer have influence.

At the same time, the Foreign Minister guaranteed that Germany will continue to stand by Israel to ensure that the Islamist Hamas finally releases all hostages, disarms and no longer has political influence in the Palestinian territories. Hamas must never again pose a threat to Israel.

The Palestinian Hamas is listed as a terrorist organization by many countries, including Germany.

At the same time, Wadephul warned Israel against further escalating the situation.

"Germany will also be forced to react to unilateral steps."

The recent UN conference in New York also showed that Israel increasingly finds itself in a minority position.

No recognition of the Palestinian state for the time being

Regarding the international discussion about a possible recognition of the Palestinian state, Wadephul stated that Germany currently has no such plans.

From the German perspective, a negotiated two-state solution remains the only sustainable path to peaceful coexistence.

But: “ For Germany, recognition of a Palestinian state is more likely to be at the end of the process .”

France, Britain and Canada have increased pressure on Israel in recent days and have said they want to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in New York in September. Portugal is also considering the issue.

After meetings in Tel Aviv, Wadephul with his Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog, Wadephul will meet today (01.08.) with representatives of the United Nations in Jerusalem and representatives of the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah./ DW
