Cyber ​​spies suspected of working for Russia's foreign intelligence service (SVR) are targeting NATO countries in a latest hacking campaign, according to a new industry report.

Hackers are using Google Drive and Dropbox to avoid detection, cybersecurity firm Palo Alto said.

The hacking attempts have included fraudulent emails containing as attachments an agenda for an upcoming meeting with an ambassador. They use this as bait, and these emails were sent to several Western and NATO diplomatic missions between May and June of this year.

A Dropbox spokesperson told Sky News: "We can confirm that we have been working with our industry partners and researchers on this issue and have immediately disabled user accounts."

Palo Alto estimated that the attackers are part of the same organization blamed for the SolarWinds breach in 2020, which gave Russian spies access to the networks of at least nine US government agencies.

The success of that spying operation – which was only discovered when the hackers decided to steal data from US cyber security company Mandiant – prompted a significant response from US authorities.

This prompted the US to announce new sanctions against Russia and its officials, although Russian government spokesmen have repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

At the time, Microsoft president Brad Smith called the supply chain attack "the largest and most sophisticated attack the world has ever seen," although some commentators criticized that description.
