Mediterranean under the power of high temperatures and fires

France has evacuated more than 14,000 people threatened by wildfires in the south-west, while flames are also spreading to Spain, Croatia and Greece.

Authorities in France's Gironde, a popular tourist region, have evacuated guards from camps - tourists left earlier. Fires have spread to the Teste-de-Buch and Landiras areas.

In southern Spain, more than 3,200 people fled the fires in the Mijas hills, although some later returned.

Portugal's fires have been brought under control at the moment. However, the Portuguese government says 659 people have died - mostly elderly - from the heat over the past week.

The Mija fires in Spain are not far from Málaga, a well-known tourist area. Elsewhere in Spain, fires have broken out in castilla y León, Galicia and Extremadura provinces.

Across the Mediterranean - from Morocco in the west to Crete in the east - thousands of firefighters and many water-bombing aircraft are battling the flames. Since Tuesday, the entire region has been plunged into extreme temperatures.

Heat waves have become more frequent, more intense and last longer due to climate change caused by humans. The earth has already warmed by about 1.1C since the beginning of the industrial era and temperatures will continue to rise unless governments worldwide make major cuts to carbon emissions.
