Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui, linked to former Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon, has been charged with fraud after the US seized $634 million from him in connection with suspected crimes.

Guo was arrested Wednesday at 6:24 a.m. by FBI agents in his luxury apartment at the Sherry-Hollande Hotel in Manhattan.

Guo and his financial adviser, Kin Ming Je, were charged with conspiracy, securities fraud and money laundering, detailed in a 38-page indictment. Ming Je is being investigated at large, Manhattan US Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement,  Fortune quoted.

Guo, a fierce critic of the Chinese Communist Party, was known for allegations of political corruption against senior party officials. Living in exile in the US since 2015, he had his assets frozen in China and Hong Kong following investigations into his finances. He sought political asylum in the US in 2017 after the regime sought to arrest him through Interpol.

The Steve Bannon connection

The 54-year-old businessman, associate of Steve Bannon, has long been the subject of legal problems. In 2020, Trump fundraiser Elliott Broidy pleaded guilty to illegal lobbying of the Trump-era White House in which he sought the extradition of Guo and the closure of the investigation into 1MDB, the Malaysian fund that was at the center of a global bribery scandal. Trump later pardoned Broid.

Bannon, the chief strategist of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, was aboard Guo's yacht in 2020 when he was arrested for fraud in connection with a nonprofit group that took private donations to build the US-Mexico border wall. Bannon, whom Trump pardoned on federal charges, still faces similar charges in New York state court.

In 2018, prosecutors said they alleged that Guo created two groups, the Rule of Law Society and the Rule of Law Foundation, to attract people who supported his efforts against the Communist Party.

Prosecutors allege that Guo and Je solicited money from their followers for an unregistered stock placement for GTV Media Group, selling $452 million in common stock. The government says the pair raised another $262 million from the Himalaya Exchange market. The Wall Street Journal reported in 2020 that Bannon and Guo were two of the main people behind GTV.

Attacks on Hunter Biden

Bannon has said the key to dealing with the media is to "smother the area with shit" — and Guo's money gave the former Breitbart editor-in-chief a commanding position in a disinformation network that not only disrupted public discourse, but weaponized it. by Guo to target other dissidents whom he vowed to "eliminate".
