Jiang Zemin, former leader of Communist China, has died at the age of 96. The authorities announced that he died due to leukemia and organ failure.

Zemin, who came to power after the brutal Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989, has gone down in history as the architect of modern China, which exists to this day.

After the West severed all ties with Beijing, he made it possible for the communist state to reintegrate into the international community, restoring sovereignty over Hong Kong, hosting the 2008 Olympic games, and most importantly, joining the World Trade Organization.

It also paved the way for China's urgent transformation into a global superpower.

Born on August 17, 1926, Jiang was known for his love of poetry. He liked to talk to guests about his knowledge of Goethe and Shakespeare

He was last seen in public in October 2019 on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the founding of Communist China.
