A senior Qatari official in charge of organizing the World Cup has admitted for the first time that 400-500 workers have died during the works for the World Cup. This figure is many times higher than what Qatari officials have admitted so far.
The new figure emerged during a response that Hassan al-Thawadi, the world body's top official, gave to British journalist Piers Morgan and which appeared to be thoughtless. The statement could strongly bring back the criticism of human rights organizations over the violation of the rights of immigrants, who worked to build stadiums, metro lines and new infrastructure needed for the development of the championship in Qatar, worth 200 billion dollars.
Before Mr Thawadi's statement, Qatar's Supreme Committee had put the number of workers who had lost their lives at 40.
