It's like deja vu, all over again. On Thursday night, Republican candidate Kevin McCarthy lost his 11th vote to be elected speaker of the House of Representatives, making it the longest race in more than 160 years.
"We are having discussions and I think everyone wants a solution. It is good to solve things from the beginning so that the Congress can be productive for the Americans", he declared.
Lawmaker Matt Gaetz of Florida is among 20 Republicans who refuse to endorse McCarthy, denying him the votes he needs to take office.
"I heard from my colleagues about all the important work we have to do. I am afraid that if we allow the election of McCarthy, we will not achieve anything", declared Gaetz.
Republicans took control of the House in the mid-term elections, but the impasse in the election of the speaker has prevented the swearing in of lawmakers and the approval of bills. Such a situation had not happened since the 1860s.
A group of 20 hard-line Republicans are refusing to endorse McCarthy, who they don't see as conservative enough. The latter has agreed to make concessions regarding some of their requests that he had initially rejected, which would weaken his position as chairman.
