As heavy rains and strong winds continue to batter the western United States, officials in the state of California have said they are "preparing for a fight" to keep residents safe from the extreme weather.
The state is facing a relatively narrow but intense storm driven by powerful gusts that could create flash flooding, power outages and mudslides.
But, unfortunately, as a result of severe weather conditions, victims have also been registered. Thus, it is reported that, in the small coastal town of Occidental, California, a child was killed when a large tree fell on his house.
The US National Weather Service warned that rain could continue at a rate of 2.5 centimeters per hour. Winds gusting over 86 miles per hour led to the cancellation of about 100 flights Wednesday at San Francisco International Airport, with more cancellations continuing into Thursday.
With trees and power lines down, about 180,000 homes and businesses in California were without power early Thursday. Officials warned residents to stay indoors, with a state of emergency in effect and flood warnings expected in the San Francisco Bay area through Thursday evening.
