Schröder: Mediator in the war in Ukraine, savior of Europe or spokesman for
Gerhard Schroeder and Vladimir Putin

The visit to Moscow and the statements of former chancellor Gerhard Schröder have caused different reactions. Is he a mediator in the war in Ukraine, a savior of Europe or a spokesman for Putin?

After former chancellor Gerhard Schröder's statements that Russia is ready to reach a solution to the Ukrainian war through talks, there was harsh criticism from Kiev. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that it is "disgusting" when "former leaders of powerful states with European values work for Russia, which fights exactly against these values". If the Moscow government really wanted the war to end, it "would not have sent reinforcements to southern Ukraine and would not have carried out mass killings on Ukrainian territory," the Ukrainian president said.

In an interview with the magazine "Stern" and the private television station RTL, Gerhard Schröder expressed "good news" after the visit last week to Moscow. "The Kremlin wants a solution through negotiations," said the former chancellor. According to him, one of the first successes was the agreement on the export of wheat from Ukraine, and "perhaps this can be slowly expanded into a ceasefire."

Procedure for expulsion from the SPD party

Because of his stance on the Ukraine war, his work for Russian energy companies and his closeness to President Vladimir Putin, the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) is currently conducting a procedure to expel Schröder from the party. The result is expected to be declared soon.

The general secretary of the liberal FDP party, Bijan Djir-Sarai, accused Schröder of attacking the federal government on behalf of Putin. "Schröder acts as Putin's spokesman in Germany and allows me," he told the "Bild" newspaper. The former chancellor seems to have "completely lost touch with reality" and is spreading "pure Kremlin propaganda" in Germany.

And Dietmar Bartsch, head of the parliamentary group of the Left party, appreciated Schröder's visit. "Of course we need a negotiated solution," Bartsch told the Rheinische Post and General-Anzeiger newspapers. "If Schröder can make a contribution to this, then we should use him."

Bartsch also criticized the assessments of Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, according to which a diplomatic solution is currently not feasible.

Praise from the Russian media

On the other hand, many Russian media also see former chancellor Gerhard Schröder as the savior of Europe from the cold winter and as a mediator in the war in Ukraine. The Izvestia newspaper emphasizes Shröder's loyalty to Putin and writes that "the former chancellor refused to apologize for his friendship with Putin." Further, the newspaper writes that talks are better than silence and that the situation in Ukraine can be resolved with the help of diplomacy. The newspaper quotes former chancellor Schröder as saying that the Kremlin is ready for peace negotiations and referring to Schröder's words criticizes that "European countries, including Germany and France, are not doing enough for this".

"Did 'Putin's friend' come to Moscow to save Germany and end the special military operation?" – is the title of an article on the Deita.ru online portal. The article further states that Schröder was probably visiting Moscow to save the Germans from a "terrible cold" that awaits them as well as to act as a mediator in the Ukraine conflict. However, if there are to be Russian-Ukrainian peace talks, the Kremlin will probably make concessions only if Chancellor Scholz gives up military aid to Ukraine in return. /DW
