Russia has used a new hybrid missile against Kharkiv. The Russians apparently want to make an example of what was once Ukraine's second-largest city, which was previously known for its laid-back style and cultural life.
In recent days, Russian forces have heavily bombed Kharkiv, once Ukraine's second-largest city, which before the war was known for its universities and cultural life. As Russian and Ukrainian news channels repeatedly report, Moscow attacked the city for the first time on August 31 with the new hybrid missile and aerial bomb called the Grom-E1.
Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov confirmed the hybrid weapon attack on his Telegram channel. It is said to be the most powerful bomb missile of its kind in the Russian arsenal. It was the first deployment of a Grom-E1 against Kharkiv. Russia previously used the new weapon near Donetsk in March 2023 and a year later in Myrnohrad, southeast of Kharkiv.
"The Grom-E1 is a highly developed weapon that emerged from the Soviet Kh-38 air-to-surface missile," writes the Ukrainian news portal "Kiev Post". The hybrid missile "combines the properties of a missile and an aerial bomb, which makes it particularly lethal."
The hybrid missile was used as a cruise bomb, according to Ukrainian authorities after the attack, who spoke of widespread destruction near Kharkiv. A Su-34 fighter-bomber served as the platform for the launch.
The Grom-E1 was first presented at the international exhibition of aviation and military technology Maks in Moscow in 2018. Russia showed the new weapon as part of its military modernization – for long-range precision strikes.
According to the military portal "Army Recognition", the air-to-ground cruise missile has a maximum range of about 200 kilometers. The flight path can be adjusted with great precision even in the last seconds before impact. Subsonic speed promotes stealthy and economical fuel consumption during longer glide flights.
The Grom-E1, equipped with a jet engine, can carry various types of warheads, with a payload of up to 350 kilograms. It is mainly used to destroy fortified installations and attack strategic targets.
The older, smaller missiles of this type came from Soviet times. With the Grom-E1, the Russian armed forces have a new satellite-guided weapon in their arsenal that can deliver heavy blows to Ukraine.
"Grom" means "thunder" in German. After the hybrid missile was deployed near Kharkiv, Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda headlined that "thunder of revenge" had struck the city - in revenge for Kursk. "The Ukrainian enemy will have nightmares about the new Russian missile if it survives," the newspaper writes.
Not far from the front, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Zaporizhzhia again called for long-range weapons in a meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof. What is needed is not only the launch of weapons to strike targets inside Russia, but also the delivery of these missiles, Zelensky said.
