President Putin called the German punitive measures a “serious mistake.” Following the attempted drone attack on Leipzig/Halle airport, the German federal government is toughening its course towards Russia.

The German government is holding Russia responsible for the attempted drone attack on Leipzig/Halle airport and has warned of punitive measures. Russian President Vladimir Putin called it a "grave mistake."

"In my opinion, this clearly contradicts the interests of the German people," the Kremlin leader said during a press conference broadcast by the Russian news agency Tass. According to him, the German government's reaction is related to "the upcoming election campaigns."

According to Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, police investigations, the manner of the attack and intelligence data point to Russia's responsibility.

Following the attempted attack with an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport, the German federal government is tightening its policy towards Russia: The Russian Consulate General in Bonn is expected to be closed, while entry controls into Germany will be tightened.

Putin speaks of success in Ukraine

Putin also spoke at the Bishkek press conference about the war in Ukraine. According to him, Russian troops are advancing more and more rapidly. In the Donetsk region, Russian soldiers have come within just a few kilometers of the cities of Sloviansk, Kramatorsk and Druzhkivka, he claimed in front of state media representatives in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek.

He also said that Russian forces have also achieved successes in the Zaporizhia region, as well as in northeastern Ukraine, near Sumy. According to Putin, Russia is winning the war and therefore will not hold negotiations with the current Ukrainian leadership. In this context, he called them “terrorists.”

At the same time, he acknowledged that some Ukrainian attacks on targets on Russian territory have been successful. Attacks on Russian ships, he said, have also been effective, but have not caused critical damage.

However, Putin's presentation of military successes contradicts the assessments of Ukrainian and Western observers. The latter have recently noted a slowdown in the Russian advance. In many segments of the front there have been almost no changes, while in some areas, Ukrainian forces have even recaptured small territories in the east of the Donetsk region, near Lyman, as well as in southern Ukraine.
