After almost six years on the run, Greek police have arrested in Athens a 44-year-old Albanian,  Nikolin Pali , accused of one of the most serious crimes that shook the Loutraki area in October 2020. He is suspected of killing his ex-partner and a 42-year-old pharmacist with an axe after he refused to separate from his wife.

The wanted man was located and arrested in an apartment in the Patisioni area of Athens, following an operation coordinated by the Homicide Department. According to Greek media, the 44-year-old was using forged identification documents and had managed to evade authorities for years.

During a search of his apartment, police found a loaded pistol and two hand grenades. According to information published by Protothema and Newsit, he failed to use the weapons during the police intervention.

Another detail that makes the matter even more serious is that Greek authorities suspect that the Albanian could be preparing another attack. According to police sources cited by Greek media, he is considered a high-risk person and is also being investigated for possible involvement in other murders that occurred in recent years.

According to Protothema, the 44-year-old was sentenced in absentia to two life sentences for the double crime, while the police are verifying his activity throughout the period he has been on the run.

The macabre event took place on October 11, 2020, in a holiday home in the Flambouro area of Corinth. The victims were 43-year-old Svetlana, also known in Greece as Fotini, originally from Ukraine, and 42-year-old Ioannis Zonitsas, a pharmacist by profession.

According to the reconstruction of the event by Greek media, the woman had begun a new relationship with the pharmacist, whom she had met only a few weeks before the crime. The two had decided to spend the weekend together at the 43-year-old's vacation home.

On the evening of October 10, the couple had been drinking wine in the courtyard of the apartment, before going inside. It was then that the woman's ex-partner allegedly entered the house, using a second key that he had kept from when he lived with her.

According to investigations published by Protothema, the Albanian had ambushed the couple and found them in the bedroom. At that moment, he allegedly grabbed an axe and launched the attack.

The 43-year-old woman suffered multiple blows to the head, as well as other serious injuries, including a fatal wound to the carotid artery. The 42-year-old pharmacist was hit twice in the head and once in the heart. Both died at the scene.

After the murders, the perpetrator allegedly took the victims' cell phones and left the apartment. He then took his ex-partner's Toyota hybrid vehicle, which he burned to eliminate any traces that could link him to the crime.

The investigation initially focused on the woman's ex-partner, who was suspected of refusing to accept the separation and had previously displayed possessive behavior toward her. According to information released at the time, he had threatened her after she decided to end the relationship.

The 44-year-old had been on the radar of Greek authorities before. According to Protothema, he was arrested in 2014 for robbery and released from prison in 2017.

After the crime, his traces disappeared. For years, the police searched for him in Athens, on the island of Mykonos and in Albania, also investigating the possibility that he had left Greek territory.

Now, following the arrest in Patissia, Greek authorities are expected to deepen their investigations to shed light on his activities over the last six years and to verify whether he is linked to other criminal events./ Protothema
