A federal judge in the US has made public a suspected suicide note from Jeffrey Epstein, a document that had until now been kept secret from the public.

The letter, unverified and undated, was published in the court filing of Epstein's former cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione, who claims to have found it after Epstein's first suicide attempt in July 2019.

The letter reads: "They investigated me for months - they found NOTHING!!!" and further: "It's a privilege to choose the time to say goodbye. Without fun, it's not worth it."

Epstein was found dead in his Manhattan cell a few weeks later, while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. The coroner ruled the death a suicide.

According to reports in The New York Times, the letter had been kept secret for nearly seven years. The US Department of Justice said it could not confirm the authenticity of the document, but did not object to its publication.

Tartaglione claims that he provided first aid to Epstein after his first suicide attempt and that handwriting experts have verified the letter.
