Ted Turner, the founder of CNN and one of the most important figures in the history of modern media, died this Wednesday at the age of 87.

The news was announced through an announcement from Turner Enterprises.

Born in Ohio and based in Atlanta, Turner became known as a visionary entrepreneur who revolutionized television news by creating the world's first 24-hour news network. Because of his direct and often bold style, he earned the nickname "The Mouth of the South."

During his career, Turner built a media empire that included the first cable superstation, as well as popular movie and cartoon channels. He also owned sports teams such as the Atlanta Braves.

Beyond business, Turner was also known as a philanthropist and international activist. He founded the United Nations Foundation, contributed to initiatives to eliminate nuclear weapons, and was strongly committed to protecting the environment. He also played an important role in the restoration of bison in the American West and created the educational series Captain Planet and the Planeteers to raise awareness of environmental issues among children.

His vision of broadcasting news in real time, 24 hours a day, made him a key figure in the global media industry. In 1991, he was named Time's "Person of the Year" for his influence on the way people experience world events.

In 2018, he revealed that he was suffering from Lewy body dementia, a progressive brain disease. In early 2025, he was hospitalized for a mild form of pneumonia, from which he later recovered in a rehabilitation center.

Ted Turner leaves behind five children, 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, while his legacy remains one of the greatest in the history of global media.
