Donald Trump has mixed up the papers again and made a surprise announcement of a "temporary" suspension of Operation Freedom, the US military initiative that aims to escort commercial shipping out of the Strait of Hormuz.

In a post on Truth Social, the US president explained that the decision is based in part on "the fact that great progress has been made towards a full and final agreement" with Iran.

Operation Freedom, therefore, "will be suspended for a short period of time, to verify whether the agreement can be finalized and signed," he continued.

Trump announced that the naval blockade will remain in effect.

Iran's state media described the move as a "retreat" after Donald Trump's "continued failures" to reopen this vital waterway for global shipping.

The move came after repeated episodes that have raised fears of a breakdown in the fragile ceasefire and after Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on Iran to “make a sensible choice” and pursue a diplomatic path that can lead to “reconstruction, prosperity and stability, and no longer pose a threat to the world.” Iran, Rubio said, must “accept the reality of the situation” and sit down at the negotiating table, accepting terms that are favorable not only to itself but also to the world. “They absolutely must not test the will of the United States,” he added.
