Saudi Arabia's 'Sleeping Prince' dies after 20 years in coma

Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Khalid bin Talal Al Saud, otherwise known as the "Sleeping Prince", has died at the age of 36, after nearly two decades in a coma as a result of a serious car accident in London in 2005.

The prince, who was just 15 years old when he was in the accident, suffered severe brain damage and internal bleeding. He was kept alive by medical equipment and mechanical ventilation, but never fully regained consciousness.

Al-Waleed was the eldest son of Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, who announced the news of his son's passing in a touching post on the social network X.

"O rested soul, return to your Lord. With hearts that believe in the will of Allah and with deep sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved son, Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. May Allah have mercy on him," his father wrote.

Prince Al-Waleed was studying at a military college in London at the time of the accident. He was then transferred for treatment to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, where he remained in a coma for 20 years.

His father, a prominent figure and brother of billionaire Al-Waleed bin Talal, never gave up hope that his son would recover. He strongly opposed any suggestion to turn off life support and continued to care for him closely.

In 2020, touching videos shared on social media showed the prince moving his fingers and hand in response to a greeting, giving hope that his condition was improving. However, he remained in critical condition until his death.
