The world's population grew by 75 million during 2023, and on the first day of 2024, the world will have more than 8 billion people, according to figures published by the US statistics agency on Thursday.

The world population growth rate in 2023 was just under 1 percent. At the beginning of 2024, the world will have 4.3 births and 2 deaths per second, says the US population bureau.

The rate of population growth in the United States in 2023 was at 0.53 percent, almost half of the world rate. The population of the United States grew by 1.7 million people in 2023, reaching 335.8 million people.

If the current pace continues through the end of the decade, it will be the decade with the slowest population growth in history for the United States, with the nation's population growing by less than 4 percent from 2020 to 2030, says William Frey, demographer at the Brookings Institution.

The decade with the lowest rate of population growth in the United States was during the 1930s, when the country was facing the Great Depression, and in that decade the population grew by 7.3 percent.

"Obviously, growth can intensify in the years after the pandemic. But it will be very difficult for the country's population to grow by 7.3 percent," says Mr. Frey.

By early 2024, the United States is expected to have a birth every 9 seconds and a death every 9.5 seconds. However, immigration will stem the country's population decline. Immigration is expected to increase the population of the United States by one person every 28.3 seconds. This combination of births, deaths and immigration will increase the population of the United States by one inhabitant every 24.2 seconds.
