Europe's "good cop" and "bad cop" meet with Jinping!

Europe continues efforts to persuade China to take steps to end the war in Ukraine.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron  , and the head of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen , are visiting Beijing, where they will meet with the Chinese president,  Xi Jinping .

Earlier, Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited the country. Macron and Von Der Leyen are expected to convey a message of unity, even as China tries to exploit potential cracks in the European alliance.

The aim of the visit is also to improve the increasingly tense trade relations between the European Union and China, its largest trading partner.

As for the issue of the war in Ukraine, with his efforts to engage Vladimir Putin, the French president is expected to play the role of the good cop. A spokesman for the Elysee Palace told reporters that Macron saw meeting points in the Chinese proposal for an end to the war.

Thus, some have described Von Der Leyen as the " bad cop " from Brussels, due to his strong relationship with President Biden and his vocal support for NATO's position.
