A giant ship moored off the coast of Dorset in Portland will be used to hold hundreds of asylum seekers trying to enter the UK illegally.

The ship, named the Bibby Stockholm, will be docked in Portland Harbor for at least 18 months and will house around 500 single adult men while their applications are processed.

According to the British Home Office, the accommodation will be basic, where health care and security will be provided 24 hours a day.

Part of the emigrants who are expected to be accommodated in this giant ship are also expected to be the Albanian emigrants who try to cross the "La Manche" channel by raft.

The government is also facing a backlash from charities and human rights activists who said the accommodation is not suitable for people fleeing the war.

But Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick said it could no longer afford to house migrants in expensive hotels.

"The Secretary of the Interior and I have been clear that the use of expensive hotels to house those who make unnecessary and dangerous trips must be stopped," Jenrick said, adding: "We will not raise interest." of illegal immigrants on the British people we are elected to serve.
He said these accommodation options should be used in the same way as neighboring European countries are to prevent the UK from becoming a 'magnet' for illegal immigrants .

"We need to use alternative accommodation options, as our European neighbors are doing - including using barges and ferries to save British taxpayers money and prevent Europe becoming a magnet for asylum seekers," he added. .
Jenrick insisted that all accommodation will meet "legal obligations", adding that the government will work closely with the local community to address their concerns including financial support.
