In a previously announced 12-point plan to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, it calls for a ceasefire and peace negotiations. China will present itself as constructive, although it maintains close relations with Russia.

China has called for a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. In addition, Beijing demands the start of peace talks and an end to the war. China's demands are part of a 12-point plan that the Foreign Ministry in Beijing published on the first anniversary of the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine. This country also demands the end of sanctions against Russia, measures to secure atomic power plants, the creation of humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians, as well as steps to ensure the export of grain.

The proposal repeats familiar positions

China has tried to appear neutral in the Ukraine conflict, on the other hand, it is tied in a close partnership with Russia. This country has avoided direct criticism of Russian aggression, and has not even used the notion of the invasion of Ukraine. Beijing has accused the West of provoking the conflict and adding to the flames by sending weapons to Ukraine.

The Chinese proposal reiterates China's well-known positions, including the need to effectively guarantee the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all countries.

China wants an end to the war mentality

At the same time, the Chinese plan requires that the legitimate security interests of all countries be taken seriously. With this, China refers to the Russian argument that it must defend itself against the USA and NATO. On the other hand, the Beijing government has demanded an end to the cold war mentality, a standard Chinese definition, for what China sees as American hegemony and interference in the affairs of other countries. China fears an escalation of the war and getting out of its control. Beijing has expressed that it will seek further peace talks and will offer "Chinese wisdom" for this.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the peace plan before its publication and spoke of an important first step. "That China in general has started talking about peace in Ukraine, I think it's not a bad thing," said Zelensky.
