One step closer to escalation

NATO is in negotiations to deploy more nuclear weapons, take them out of storage and put them on alert, in the face of a growing threat from Russia and China, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Monday.

He told the British newspaper 'Telegraph' that members held consultations on transparency on their nuclear arsenal as a deterrent.

"I will not go into the operational details of how many nuclear warheads should be operational, which should be stockpiled, we still have to agree on this issue. That is exactly what we are doing," he said, according to Reuters.

He said NATO's goal is, of course, a world without nuclear weapons, but as long as nuclear weapons exist, "we will remain a nuclear alliance, because a world in which Russia, China and North Korea have nuclear weapons and NATO does not have, the world is more dangerous".

Stoltenberg said last week that NATO's nuclear weapons are the "ultimate guarantee of security" and a tool to maintain peace.

"Not at all good news comes from the east of Europe, as we may have a new escalation of tensions between Russia and NATO". This is what Vladimir Putin's shadow man, the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said.

Peskov's reaction comes after the strong warning made by the head of the North Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, about placing Western nuclear weapons on high alert.

"This is nothing more than a new escalation of tension. Vladimir Putin, unlike Western leaders, "never touches on his own initiative", issues related to nuclear weapons, but only does so "when answering questions someone's questions from journalists, including foreign ones". All the more that Stoltenberg's words contradict the results of the summit in Switzerland on Ukraine "which confirm, if I'm not mistaken, the inadmissibility of such rhetoric".
