Claudio Graziano, the chairman of state-controlled Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri and a former general in the Italian army, has died, the company said in a statement on Monday.

"Fincantieri expresses its immense pain at the sudden death of General Claudio Graziano," the group said in a statement to the media, without giving any details on the circumstances.

70-year-old Graziano was found dead in his home in Rome. He was appointed chairman of Fincantieri in 2022.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni praised him as "a fair servant of the state, who throughout his life honored the nation, the armed forces and the institutions with dedication, competence and professionalism".

Italian news agency ANSA and other media reported there is evidence to suggest Graziano may have killed himself, a possibility also raised by Lucio Malan, a senator from the Fratelli d'Italia party.

Fincantieri is the world's fourth largest commercial and military shipbuilding company, based in Trieste.
