There are currently 100 firefighters in action in Magdeburg with three professional brigades and four volunteer brigades.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Dr. Reiner Haseloff, said in a media statement that one of the two killed was a small child.
"This is one of the most terrible things imaginable. This is a grave and terrible thing," he said.
Dr Haseloff also says that the suspect, who is from Saudi Arabia, "was working as a doctor in this country and had arrived in Germany in 2006."
Magdeburg University Hospital has clarified that it is "caring for 10 to 20 patients" but is preparing for more wounded people to be sent there.
Injured people were seen being carried on stretchers into dozens of ambulances after the car crashed into visitors at the Christmas market tonight.
Regional government spokesman Matthias Schuppe and city spokesman Michael Reif said they suspected it was a deliberate attack.
