From a nation in mourning to deep economic crisis, Britain in 7 weeks and two

There are two photos taken exactly seven weeks apart, performing the traditional and ceremonial rites of the monarch meeting with the British prime minister, in court to ask them to form a new government.

Between the firing of the first and the second, many things passed, plunging a nation into mourning and then into acute and turbulent economic crisis, one startling change after another that many people in the country had never experienced.

Queen Elizabeth II met incoming Prime Minister Liz Truss on September 6. It was the last time the monarch was seen in a public image after 70 years on the throne. Her reign had spanned two centuries, post-colonialism, Brexit and a pandemic.

For Truss, it was a fresh start, ending weeks of acrimonious battle for the leadership of the Conservative party with Rishi Sunak handing her the keys to 10 Downing Street.

The predecessor, Boris Johnson, was forced to resign amid a cloud of ethics scandals.

The Queen, using a walking stick after ongoing mobility problems, is seen smiling.

Two days later, the queen died.

For many, the meeting was perhaps the high point of Truss's governance. After that, she plunged into a descent. She was overthrown and was out of power for 45 days.

Her economic policies wreaked havoc on markets and sent the pound to its lowest against the dollar in 40 years.

And now, this week, another photo: former Treasury chief Sunak, now prime minister, was photographed yesterday shaking hands with King Charles III. The same Sunak who said Truss' economic plan was a "fairy tale".

He now faces major obstacles, with one of Britain's worst economic crises in modern history.

So, there is a clamor among the opposition and beyond calling for general elections, noa.al quotes an AP analysis. By law, this must not happen until 2024, and Sunak has said he will not call an election, even after the recent unrest.

The Conservatives face a drastic drop in the polls.

Charles III is secure in his position and almost certain to be on the throne longer than the government. His mother met 15 prime ministers in her 70 years on the throne; Charles met two, in less than two months.

But he is still the oldest person ever to ascend the British throne.

In the midst of such chaos, who knows what the next picture might bring?
