Within a year, Britain has its third prime minister. He is Rishi Sunak, the country's first black leader. He now faces challenges such as mitigating an economic crisis that has left the country's finances in a precarious state as millions of Britons struggle to pay their food and energy bills. Today Mr. Sunak met with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace. As VOA correspondent Henry Ridgwell reports, years of political chaos have damaged Britain's global image.
Britain's third prime minister in seven weeks.
"The UK is a great country, but there is no doubt that we face a deep economic challenge. Now we need stability and unity", said Prime Minister-elect Rishi Sunak.
Analysts say the new prime minister has a major advantage.
"Guaranteeing economic balance, creating confidence in international financial markets that Britain is reasonably governed again," says Tony Travers at the University of London School of Economics.
Mr Sunak served as finance minister under former prime minister Boris Johnson - who withdrew from the run on Sunday after a brief bid to return to office.
Liz Truss won the race to replace Mr Johnson as prime minister in September. But she resigned last week after her tax cut plans raised the government's borrowing costs.
Rishi Sunak - who lost to Ms Truss in the previous leadership campaign - won the support of a majority of Tory lawmakers on Monday to take the role unchallenged.
"It's really confusing. And on the international stage it looks like a mockery of the values that Britain stood for," says Quentin Peel with the Chatham House organization.
Many Britons say they want stability.
"We have to fix this situation. We are really in trouble. If you look at all the foreign press around us, they are making fun of us," says Keith Dargue, a resident of London.
"I would like a calm government to run the country after Brexit, after a COVID epidemic and with the threat of the breakup of the United Kingdom," says Duncan Wood, another Londoner.
In the six years since the referendum to leave the European Union, Britain has had five prime ministers.
"During the last few months of political upheaval, it is clear that the Brexit decision has been at the core. This fact has been obscured because COVID and the war in Ukraine have become the big headline grabbers. Leaving the European Union has really hurt the economy. British," says Quentin Peel with the Chatham House organization.
Britain is second only to the United States in the level of military support for Ukraine. Continuing this aid is key to restoring Britain's global image, argues analyst Peel.
"Let's support Ukraine and give them all the help we can to make sure they don't lose this war with Russia. Secondly, I would say that we should improve relations with the rest of the European Union".
With inflation above 10 percent – and the economy tipped to slide into recession – Prime Minister Sunak's political honeymoon is likely to be short-lived.
