Iran has presented to the United States, through the mediation of Pakistan, a new proposal for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and achieving a lasting solution to the conflict, postponing negotiations on its nuclear program to a later stage.
The news was reported by Axios, which cited an anonymous US official and other sources familiar with the matter.
According to them, the initiative aims to overcome the current diplomatic impasse and internal divisions in the Iranian leadership regarding concessions that could be offered to Washington in the nuclear field.
Tehran's proposal envisages the immediate handling of the issue of reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the US naval blockade, while negotiations on uranium enrichment would be postponed to a second phase.
However, according to the same sources, an agreement limited only to the Strait of Hormuz could deprive US President Donald Trump of important negotiating leverage to achieve a long-term suspension of Iran's uranium enrichment and the reduction of its nuclear stockpiles.
