A boat with dozens of migrants on board has sunk in the English Channel, off the coast of Le Portel.

Twelve migrants were reported drowned and 53 others rescued by French authorities, but many are in serious health.

Dangerous crossings by small Boats of the English Channel, with rubber and other small boats often used to take large groups of people on the dangerous journey in the hope of seeking asylum in the UK have increased in recent years.

The issue became a major political setback for the previous conservative government, which was criticized by migrant rights groups for its harsh rhetoric against asylum seekers.
