Saleh Al Arouri, the number two of Hamas, who was killed yesterday by an Israeli army attack on Hezbollah bases in Beirut, Lebanon, was on the list of those who should die for Tel Aviv. And he knew this very well.
Israel had several times portrayed him as one of the possible targets of the campaign to eliminate Hamas leaders abroad. But Al Arouri was not hiding, as he probably counted on defending himself in Beirut, with the help of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah and the Pasdaran (Iran's Revolutionary Guard) itself.
Born in 1966, originally from the West Bank, he was considered one of the main figures of the politburo, while he was involved in numerous attacks and spent 10 years in prison. In 2016, the Israelis expelled him and he settled in Turkey, then Ankara – after a phase of tensions with Tel Aviv – “invited” him to move to Qatar, from where he then moved to Beirut.
Progressively al Arouri assumed a dual role. The first line involved traveling to the Middle East, giving interviews, always making harsh announcements. A face and a voice to explain faction positions, to dictate terms for hostages, to renew the great challenge to the enemy. His second mission was related to the internal leadership of the Belt, in particular Yahia Sinar and Mohammed Deif, the strategist of the Ezzedine al Qassam Brigades, is more discreet but concrete. In exile he forged new relationships and cultivated older ones with the Axis of Resistance, the front animated by the Ayatollahs, and in particular Hezbollah. Some analysts have even placed him in contrast with other characters, judgments not always clear and often tends to sow a storm in the ranks of the militias.
However, a profile that is always important, an enemy feared by the Jewish state and the US, with the latter since the Gaza crisis, had raised the price for the "head" of Al Arour from 5 to 10 million dollars, making him presented it as the connection of the Palestinian diaspora with the military wing, with a vision very close to that of Iran.
It is not even excluded - according to one version - that he participated in the preparatory summits of the Diluvio al Ansa offensive together with the officers of the Qods division of the Pasdaran. The thesis dismissed by those who believe that the leaders in Gaza have not given many details about what happened on October 7 with the attack on the kibbutz.
These are small aspects in a war without borders and where Israel has set no limits for itself. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense and Intelligence promised to do exactly what happened yesterday in Beirut.
Official Tel Aviv formed a task force named "Nile" to hunt down opponents, combined the knowledge of the Shin Bet, Mossad and military intelligence to operate in the Palestinian territories and in every country in the region. Israel used vast funds to recruit spies and evoked a "new Munich" alluding to the long-running vendetta against those allegedly responsible for the massacre at the Olympic Games in Germany in 1972. A story that never ended. And by a twist of fate, the Beirut strike coincided with the death of Zvi Zamir, the intelligence chief who led that retaliation. He was 98 years old.
After the war against Fatah, the war against Hamas and Jihad began, with similar tactics, close and distant operations. In Dubai, Tunisia, Malaysia and Gaza. New targeted assassinations, new target lists, more bombs, airstrikes, contract killers. In fact, friendly countries of the Islamic faction have taken Netanyahu's statements seriously. Turkey, where al-Arouri was at home with other militants, reacted by raiding (most recently on Tuesday) suspected Mossad "collaborators" and threatened severe retaliation.
Qatar, key to diplomatic negotiations, reportedly asked Israel not to touch its guests. So it is not surprising that the blow came in Beirut, which has always been a bloody arena, with a weak state and favorable conditions. It was the same after Munich and for years.
The elimination of al-Arour is a serious blow to Hamas, even if no one is irreplaceable and the faction is used to defeat. Indeed, the difficult trials have strengthened him, amid the rhetoric of martyrdom and the desire not to give up even an inch. At the same time, it is a signal for Hezbollah, the dominant reality in Lebanon and a solid partner of the Palestinian Mujahideen. The killer drone has found the target in his manor.
