Claudine Gay

Claudine Gay has resigned as president of Harvard. The 53-year-old, daughter of immigrants from Haiti, had become the first black woman at the head of the most famous university in the United States. The resignation comes after weeks of controversy, including accusations of anti-Semitism in campus protests, as well as accusations that she copied material in her academic publications without proper attribution.

"It is with great emotion, but with great love for Harvard, that I am writing to inform you that I am resigning," the 53-year-old wrote in a letter, adding that "it has been terrible to have been the subject of personal attacks and racially motivated threats.”

Just six months ago, Claudine took office at Harvard, the first black woman and the second woman to be president of America's most famous university. Alan Garber, a physician and economist, will serve in her place as interim president until a successor is chosen.

Gay is the second head of an Ivy League university to resign in recent weeks. In December, her University of Pennsylvania colleague Elizabeth Magill co-starred with Gay and MIT's Sally Kornbluth in a congressional hearing apologizing for episodes of anti-Semitism and threats against Jewish students after the attack. of October 7 of Hamas against Israel.

Gay's resignation ends the shortest tenure in Harvard's century-long history, the Harvard Crimson student newspaper noted. A professor of African American studies, Claudine took office in July, six months after her appointment.
