The Prime Minister of France, Elisabeth Borne, has resigned. The news was announced by the French Presidency, where it is said that President Emmanuel Macron has today accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Borne.

Borne was appointed prime minister in May 2022 following Macron's re-election for a second term. She was the second female Prime Minister of France.

Among those cited as potential candidates to replace Borne are 34-year-old Education Minister Gabriel Attal and 37-year-old Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu.

Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire and former Agriculture Minister Julien Denormandie have also been mentioned by experts as possible options for France's next prime minister.

The statement from Macron's office said Borne will continue to handle day-to-day domestic affairs until a new government is appointed.

Macron was expected to reshuffle his senior team after legislative setbacks and give his presidency a fresh boost ahead of the Paris Olympics.

The move also comes just five months before European Parliament elections, with Eurosceptics expected to score a record victory at a time of widespread public discontent over rising living costs and the failure of European governments to stem migration flows.

Polls show Macron's party trailing far-right leader Marine Le Pen by around eight to 10 points heading into June's EU elections.
