The Macedonian President, Stevo Pendarovski, has clarified that he has no feelings of opposition towards the Albanian community and that his reaction to the recent visit of the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has been misinterpreted.
Kurti's visit to North Macedonia, namely to the municipalities of Çairi and Tetova, was accompanied by strong statements, since during a rally where Kurti was participating, the flag of "Greater Albania" was also displayed in public.
Meanwhile, the discontent among Macedonians also caused the naming of a street in Çair in the name of the Adem Demaçi activity, with the reason that the decision was made "without broad inter-ethnic consensus".
In an interview for TV21, President Pendarovski said that his problem was with the organizers who had allowed the provocation with the nationalist flag.
"Even those who wrote it, know that I am not an Albanophobe. I have known Afrim Gashi, Bilal Kasami and Izet Mejiti for a long time, not to mention the rest of the political spectrum. I also have quite correct relations with Prime Minister Kurti. We have met at many conferences and I can say that he has a good opinion of me. Kurt's visit was not problematic in itself. During his visit, in his public appearances in Tetovo and Çair, I cannot see a single sentence where he insults Macedonia or the Macedonian people. My reaction was to his hosts, who through such iconographies tried to profile themselves in front of the electorate. I also have no objection to the naming of the street Adem Demaçi,because if it is about a person who studied for a period in Skopje and lived on that street and received a title from the European Parliament 30 years ago, then it is clear that it is not about any local nationalist", said Pendarovski.
During his stay in Skopje and Tetovo, the Prime Minister of Kosovo did not meet with the government officials, but was received by the three leaders of the Albanian opposition parties.
The Macedonian opposition led by VMRO-DPMNE has blamed the social democratic government for allowing the organization of Kurti's reception, while also criticizing President Pendarovski for the delayed reaction.
