The Greek MEP Eva Kaili is expected to appear next Thursday before the Belgian authorities, who will decide whether or not to impose a detention measure for her involvement in the Qatargate scandal.
According to what the newspaper " Ekathemerini " writes, if Kaili is found guilty in Greece as well, the punishment given by the judicial authorities in the neighboring country will be many times more severe than in Belgium.
In Brussels, the sentences for the crimes she is accused of are more lenient, ranging from three to a maximum of five years.
In Greece, Kaili is being investigated by prosecutors and the Money Laundering Authority. They are trying to ascertain whether she brought in undeclared money from abroad and invested it, specifically in real estate.
If evidence proves the charges and she is found guilty, Eva Kaili could face up to 15 years in prison. According to the media there, the focus is now on Elontech, an NGO founded in 2017 and led by its sister, on which controls are being developed, especially in relation to cash flows.
It is suspected that this NGO may have been used as a tool to attract European programs worth up to 15 million euros.
