Japan has done a recount of its islands and has discovered that there are 7,000 more islands in its territory than previously thought.

Japan's Geospatial Authority digital maps recently revealed that there are 14,125 islands in total in its territory, rather than the 6,852 thought in a 1987 report by the Japan Coast Guard.

Although 7,000 new islands have been discovered, this has not changed the total land area of Japan. The new number does not include any land acquired artificially.

The Japan Geospatial Authority announced that the discovery of the new islands was made thanks to technological progress. There is no international agreement on how islands are counted, so Japan used the same size criteria as it did 35 years ago, meaning that all natural areas of land that have a circumference of at least 100 meters are counted .

Japan has some open territorial issues about the islands around it.

There has been a dispute with Russia since World War II over the Kuril Islands. Tokyo considers them as its northern territories, but in fact these islands are under the jurisdiction of Russia. Soviet troops captured these islands from Japan at the end of the war.

Japan also claims the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, which it currently administers, but China disputes this.

Even with South Korea, Japan has a more than 70-year-old dispute over the sovereignty of a group of islands called Dokdo. Both sides claim it.
