Shocking study: Half of the world, obese by 2035

Over four billion people will be affected by this phenomenon, the report says, while with more worrying rates, the rates will increase among children. The most problematic situation will appear in low- or middle-income countries in Africa and Asia.

The study predicts that within the period under discussion, the cost of obesity will exceed 4 trillion dollars per year. The federation's president, Professor Louise Baur, described the report's findings as a clear warning to countries to act now, or risk the consequences in the future.

Among children and adolescents, including both boys and girls, the rate is at risk of doubling compared to 2020 levels. The trend, according to Baur, is particularly worrying and "governments and policymakers around the world must do everything they can to avoid passing on health, social and economic costs to the younger generation.

The report particularly emphasizes the effects of the prevalence of obesity in countries with lower incomes. Reasons include trends in preferences for processed foods, higher levels of sedentary lifestyles, weaker policies to control food supply and marketing, and health services which are less well-resourced to help manage weight and health education.

The findings estimate that rising obesity rates worldwide will have a significant impact on the global economy, equating to 3% of global Gross Domestic Product.
