Greece seeks to lead humanitarian mission in Mariupol

Greece has expressed a desire to lead the humanitarian mission in Mariupolion destroyed by Russian forces.

Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias aims to personally go to Mariupol as the head of the mission that will transport humanitarian aid to Ukrainian civilians.

According to information, Greece is expected to co-operate with the Inter-National Red Cross in consultation with the Ukrainian and Russian government.

Negotiations between Athens, Moscow and Kiev are expected in the following days.

If the warring parties accept Athens' proposal for the transfer of Nikos Dendia, as head of the mission that will transport humanitarian aid to Mariupol, the trip will take place in the following days after Nikos Dendia returns from New Delhi.

The besieged port city of Mariupol in southeastern Ukraine has faced continued shelling by Russians, who have been trying to surround the Black Sea port since February 24th.

Mariupoli is a key region for Kremlin forces as if Russia takes control of the city it would allow Moscow to form a land corridor between the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk and Crimea, which are already under Russian control.
