From the hottest day of the year to deadly floods and fires, the European Union climate monitoring service has reported that Europe experienced record extreme weather in 2021.

The Climate Change Service Copernicus said that while the Earth's surface was nearly 1.2 degrees Celsius warmer than pre-industrial levels last year, Europe saw an average increase of more than two degrees. This is a threshold beyond which extreme dangerous weather events become more likely and more intense.

"2021 was a year of extremes, including the hottest summer in Europe, the heat waves in the Mediterranean, the floods and droughts in Western Europe," C3S director Carlo Buontempo said in a statement.

"This shows that understanding the extremes of weather and climate is becoming increasingly important for key sectors of society."

The hottest day ever recorded in Europe, 48.8 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit) was reported in Sicily, Italy last summer, during a heat wave that lasted for weeks.

In Greece, rising temperatures fueled deadly fires leaving forests and homes in more than 8,000 square kilometers burned to the ground.

Germany, meanwhile, broke the record in mid-July for the largest number of rainfall in a single day.

Last month, Met Eireann's Joanna Donnelly issued a horrific warning that climate change is scary and warned "you have to be afraid."
