Acute hepatitis affecting children, WHO: The first victim is recorded

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Saturday that a child had lost his life to acute hepatitis affecting children while no details were released about the child who died, nor where the death was recorded.

The WHO has clarified that it has been informed about 169 cases in 12 countries.

According to the organization, part of the UN system, until April 21, cases of acute hepatitis of unknown origin in children have been registered in the United Kingdom, USA, Spain, Israel, Denmark, Ireland, Netherlands, Italy, Norway, France , Romania and Belgium.

Children who developed acute hepatitis were from one month to 16 years old. The WHO said that in the last 74 cases, a common influenza virus, known as adenovirus, has been detected. Twenty of the children tested were infected with the new coronavirus, while 19 had adenovirus and COVID-19.

The WHO said it was closely monitoring the situation and was working with British health authorities and other member states and partners on the cases.

U.S. health officials have issued an urgent warning, urging pediatricians to be vigilant about cases of hepatitis in minors, possibly linked to a flu virus, as part of a broader investigation into unexplained cases of acute hepatitis in children.
