An Israeli air strike has killed 76 members of a large family, rescue officials said Saturday, a day after the United Nations chief warned again that there is no safe place in Gaza and that the ongoing Israeli offensive is creating "major obstacles" to the delivery of humanitarian aid.
Friday's attack on a building in Gaza City was among the deadliest attacks since the war between Israel and Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the US - 12 weeks ago, said Mahmoud Bassal, spokesman for the Hamas-controlled Gaza Civil Protection Department. He offered a partial list of names of those killed – 16 heads of the al-Mugharabi family – and said there were women and children among the victims.
Among those killed was Issam al-Mughrabi, a U.N. Development Program employee, his wife and five children, RFE/RL reported.
Israel declared war on the radical Hamas group after its fighters attacked Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostage. Israel has vowed to continue fighting until Hamas is destroyed and ousted from power in Gaza and all hostages are freed.
Gaza health authorities said more than 20,000 Palestinians were killed during the war and more than 53,000 wounded.
Israel blames Hamas for the high number of civilians killed, saying the group operates in inhabited areas.
The Israeli military has said 139 of its soldiers were killed in the ground offensive. It said it had killed thousands of Hamas fighters, including about 2,000 in the past three weeks, but has not provided any evidence for those claims.
Israel announced on Friday evening that its forces were expanding the ground offensive "to other areas of the Strip, with a concentration in the south."
The military said it would continue operations in northern Gaza, including Gaza City, where the ground offensive was initially focused.
