The United States envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, and the European envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia talks, Miroslav Lajcak, said on Wednesday that they are trying to find a solution to the issue of reciprocity in the use of personal documents and license plates. cars, which would avoid tensions on the ground.
They made these comments after meetings in Pristina with Kosovo leaders, before going to Belgrade, in an effort to secure an agreement between the parties.
"We are here to make sure that nothing bad will happen", said Mr. Lajçak, not wanting to give details about the possible proposals for solving the case.
"The most important message is that we are here together with Gabriel Escobar, first to show the unity between the European Union and the United States, which is complete and we are working together when it comes to the normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo . And secondly, the international factor is very concerned about what we saw on the ground on July 31 and we expect that all of us together, the negotiators but also the leaders of Kosovo and Serbia, will not allow this to be repeated on August 31 and for this we are here", said Mr. Lajçak.
"Both sides have assured us that they do not want escalation, they do not want violence on September 1. So now we are here to make sure that all the good wishes and that optimism turn into a concrete proposal", said Mr. Escobar, underlining that his visit represents support for the dialogue facilitated by the European Union.
"I'm here to actually support Kosovo and Serbia to find a way forward on all these difficult issues...I wanted to make sure people understood that my visit here was really to show full support for dialogue facilitated by the European Union", said Mr. Escobar.
Prime Minister Kurti said that during the talks in Brussels, the Serbian side had no commitment and concrete proposals. He said that Serbia is unnecessarily and completely artificially escalating rhetoric and actions in the field of security, while threatening Serbian citizens to prevent their integration.
The Serbian president has accused Kosovo of rejecting any compromise, while emphasizing that Pristina's only goal is the abolition of everything related to the Serbian state and the persecution of Serbs from Kosovo.
He has warned that Kosovo Serbs may leave all institutions if no solution is found for their concerns. This warning was reiterated on Wednesday by the mayors of the four municipalities in the north of Kosovo inhabited by Serb majority, during a joint meeting regarding the issue of reciprocity.
