Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been honored with the 2022 UNESCO Peace Prize for her efforts to welcome refugees.

“All the jury members were moved by her courageous decision in 2015 to welcome over 1.2 million refugees, especially from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Eritrea.

This is the legacy she leaves", declared the president of the jury and the winner of the "Nobel Peace Prize 2018", Denis Mukëege.

The honor, which is officially called the "Félix Houphouët-Boigny-UNESCO Peace Prize", is named after the former president of the Ivory Coast.

It has been awarded annually since 1989 to individuals, organizations or institutions that have made a special effort to promote, research or ensure peace. It has not yet been decided when the award will be presented to Merkel, who left politics last year after serving four terms as Germany's chancellor.

In the summer of 2015, Merkel opened her country's borders.
