British musician Elton John has announced he is leaving Twitter, joining other celebrities who have closed their accounts on the social network after it was bought by billionaire Elon Musk.

John, who is currently on his final world tour, cited a recent change in Twitter policy as the reason for his departure.

"All my life I have tried to use music to bring people together. But now it saddens me to see how misinformation is being used to divide our world," the musician announced on Twitter, where he is followed by more than 1.1 million people.

"I have decided to no longer use Twitter, given the recent policy change, which will allow misinformation to flourish unchecked," he added.

There was also a reaction from Musk, who wrote that he loves John's music.

"I hope you will come back. Is there any misinformation that you are particularly concerned about?” asked Musk. Still no response from the musician.
