SERIOUS in the USA, the mother gets out of the shower and finds the 5-year-old

Five-year-old twin boys and a girl from California have been found dead by their mother shortly after she got out of the shower.

The mother told police she only left them a few minutes alone to take a shower Monday morning, but when she got out of the shower, she found them unconscious on the living room floor, according to the New York Post.

The mother immediately called 911, as they had no signs of life, according to Ben Gurley, chief of the Bronx police patrol.

"When you walk into a room and see two 5-year-olds lying on the floor unresponsive and cold at this time of year, you can't imagine what the family is going through. You can imagine what mom and dad are going through," Gurley told the New York Daily News.

The mother found her twins dead in their home on East 175th Street off Weeks Avenue in Claremont Village around 11:20 a.m., police said.

Doctors pronounced the twins dead at the scene. Investigators said the children had been sick for several days and did not go to school Monday, according to WNBC. Details about their illness are not known and their cause of death will be determined by the city medical examiner's office.

The children's father, who was not home at the time, was questioned by police on Monday afternoon. Their mother was taken to the hospital due to shock and emotional trauma.

"She's not hurt, but she's emotionally devastated," Gurley said.

The family had no history of domestic violence, police said. Firefighters tested the air and found no carbon monoxide.

"At this point, we have to work our way up to the crime scene," Gurley said. "We hope it's not a crime scene. Hopefully, this is an unfortunate tragedy."
