"I would have ethnically cleansed Kosovo," Serbian minister retracts and apologizes for scandalous statement

Serbia's Minister of State Administration and Local Self-Government, Snezhana Paunovic, has apologized to President Aleksandar Vu?i? and Prime Minister ?uro Macu after her statement about the "ethnic cleansing of Kosovo" caused reactions at home and abroad.

Paunovic justified herself by saying that her statement was taken out of context and that only a 7-second segment of the interview was cut.

But, in the interview broadcast by the media where she gave the interview, she is clearly heard saying that "if she had been in Slobodan Milosevic's place in 1998, she would have ethnically cleansed Kosovo."

"This was my story, not a political statement. It's uncomfortable for me to have to explain that this is not the president's or the government's policy," she said.

The Serbian minister also claimed that she was talking about the removal of those who "did not feel part of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia", while people who would choose "terrorist acts" would be treated as terrorists.

She described the decision of the Kosovo authorities to declare him persona non grata as paradoxical, stating that the decision to “permanently ban” him from entering Kosovo was taken by what she called “the provisional institutions of Kosovo”.
