Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i? attempted to distance himself on Wednesday from the fascist rhetoric of Minister of State Administration and Local Self-Government Snezhana Paunovi?, calling her statement promoting the ethnic cleansing of Albanians in Kosovo "careless" and "irresponsible."

During a statement to journalists in Kiev, Ukraine, the Serbian head of state emphasized that the minister's position does not represent his official policy or that of the Serbian Government.

"This statement does not reflect the will and policy of the president and government of Serbia. We must be responsible, our policy is dialogue, compromise, peace and stability and never ethnic cleansing, period," Vu?i? declared, according to Danas.

The statement that in 1998 he would have "ethnically cleansed Kosovo" if he had been in the place of the former fascist president of Serbia, Slobodan Milosevic, has prompted the reaction of the Serbian opposition, European officials and Kosovo institutions, while he has been declared persona non grata by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
