Germany significantly increases tobacco tax, a pack is expected to cost 12 euros

The German government plans to increase taxes on tobacco products more than initially planned, as part of measures to protect public health and increase revenue in the federal budget.

According to a proposal from the Ministry of Finance, which was obtained by the German Editorial Network, the price of a pack of 20 cigarettes is expected to reach almost 12 euros by 2030, about 40 cents more than the previous forecast.

The tax increase will be implemented gradually each year and will not only affect cigarettes, but also roll-your-own tobacco, pipe tobacco, cigars and alternative products such as e-liquids. For the latter, the tax portion will increase by one cent per milliliter each year.

According to the government, the measure aims not only to cover the budget deficit, but also to reduce the number of smokers, especially among young people. Authorities estimate that the tax increase will bring the state budget about 756 million euros in additional revenue in 2027, while by 2030 these revenues are expected to exceed 3.5 billion euros per year.
