Former Assad colonel arrested, responsible for chemical attacks that killed over 1,400 civilians

Syrian authorities have arrested Ahmad Habib Ali, a former colonel in Bashar al-Assad's regime, accused of involvement in sarin gas attacks during 2013–2017.

The Interior Ministry said Ali oversaw the production and storage of chemical weapons, including sarin gas, as the former head of Unit 417 at the Scientific Studies and Research Center, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency.

He was detained in Latakia province and is accused of producing around 20 sarin gas aerial bombs, each weighing 250 kg, used in attacks during the civil war.

The worst sarin attack occurred in August 2013 in Ghouta, where over 1,400 people, mostly children, were killed. International reports say pro-government forces used sarin more than 50 times between 2011 and 2024.

The chemical agent sarin was used by Assad's forces in August 2013 against residents of Ghouta, an agricultural area on the outskirts of Damascus, resulting in the deaths of at least 1,400 people, many of them children. Between 2011 and 2024, pro-government forces used sarin more than 50 times.

The SSRC center, founded in 1971, collapsed after the fall of the regime in December 2024, while its facilities were also hit by Israeli attacks.
